Cops put the byte on information thief
A man who hacked into an express delivery company's internal system and stole more than 60,000 pieces of private information has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined 6,000 yuan (US$900), prosecutors in Qingpu District said Thursday.
As a national demonstration zone, Qingpu District is home to 88 delivery companies. In July last year, one of them, as yet unnamed, found someone had exploited a flaw in their system to steal more than 60,000 pieces of customer information.
The company reported the matter to police who identified a suspect, Gong, who was later arrested.
Gong confessed, telling police that he had paid 500 yuan for a hacker software via an online chat group. The seller told him that the software could help him steal information and gave him some guidance on how to use it.
Between April and July, Gong stole information over 200 times. None of the stolen information had been sold.
